Created between 1406 and 1420, the Tian Ten, also known as the Temple of Heaven, is one of the most extraordinary sights to see for tourists in Beijing. It was originally built as a place for emperors and other court figures to make offerings, and features an elaborate design with separate buildings to pay tribute to each of the important celestial bodies: Earth, Moon, and Sun. The Temple of Heaven stands in contrast to several more of Beijing’s famous temples, the Temple of Earth, Temple of Sun, and Temple of Moon.

In 1998, the Temple of Heaven became a protected site on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its cultural significance to the Chinese People and their visitors. Sights to see at the Temple of Heaven include the grand Altar of Heaven made of white marble, the famous Echo Wall where you can hear a whisper from nearly 200 meters away, and the Imperial Vault of Heaven once containing the memorial tablets detailing the Emperor’s history and lineage.
