One of the most famous attractions to visitors of Beijing is Tiananmen Square. This landmark first rose to infamy as the site of several historical events, most notably the student protests in 1989 that ended in violence that was broadcast around the world. Perhaps fitting for a democratic protest, the site was also host to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Obviously, the site is of extreme cultural significance and is of great value to those visitors who are interested in getting to know a little bit of history.
Today, however, the square is best known for its proximity to attractions that are of interest to visitors. Those looking for things to do in Tiananmen Square can visit the nearby Monument to the People’s Heroes, or the Mausoleum or former leader Mao Zedong. The Square also includes a gate into the famous Forbidden City, which itself houses many items of significant interest to tourists in Beijing.
