It is over 80,000 square meters in area, and contains a number of historic buildings in addition to the beautiful natural landscapes and animal attractions. The site was once home to the Victoria Barracks, but once they were given to the government in 1979, the area was eventually turned into a public park that opened in 1991.
The Edward Youde Aviary is the largest aviary in Hong Kong. There are also plant and orchid exhibitions in the Forsgate Conservatory. Gardens like the Tai Chi Garden and the Garden Plaza highlight regional native plants, while other attractions in the park include the Museum of Teaware, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Center, and the Wavell House.
