Antioquia, in the central northwestern part of the South American nation of Colombia, is one of the country’s 32 departments. Much of its territory lies in the Andes Mountains, but it also has a small stretch of Caribbean coast. Tourists come from all over the world to stay in budget hotels in Antioquia and enjoy its scenery and hospitality. One of the department’s interesting little communities is Santa Fe de Antioquia. Founded in 1541, this quiet little colonial town was once the capital. Time has seemingly stood still here, and the community looks much as it did in an earlier era.

The present capital of Antioquia is Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia. Medellin has thrown off much of its bad reputation from the days of the drug lords to become one of the top tourist destinations in Colombia. Because of its excellent climate, Medellin has been called The City of Eternal Spring. Along Avenue Poblado is the “Milla de Oro” (Golden Mile). This is the hot spot for shopping, bars, casinos, and the city’s best restaurants. Among Medellin’s many fine museums are the Museo de Antioquia and the Museo de Arte Moderno, both of which have wonderful art collections. Medellin’s most important church is the 18th century Basilica de la Candelaria on Parque Berrio. Every visitor to Medellin must see the newly refurbished Jardin Botanico, the most beautiful park in the city. For information on cheap hotels in Antioquia, see our listings at EasyToBook.com.
