Buenaventura is the main Pacific port city of Columbia, located in the Valle del Cauca department. It is considered a rather untrustworthy area to visit due to civil and social disrest. However, many people do pass through Buenaventura on their way to areas that surround the city, making it a gateway of sorts. The government of Columbia has arranged for a marine special forces unit to cover the area considered a bad part of the city.
