Dubrovnik, Croatia is nothing if not very well fortified. It is totally fascinating to see all the fortresses built to defend the city in the 15th century. This fort was to defend the main entrance gate, the bridge and the moat at Pile. Fort Bokar is on the southwest side of the city and opposite Fort Lovrijenac.
This particular fort can thank the talents of many well-known military architects of the period such as: Michelozzo from Florence, Ferramolino from Bergamo and Mato Martini. So when you look at the fortress, you will see some interesting styles that went into making it not only functional, but also good looking. Look for the three horizontal cornices and the battlements with their spectacular view over looking the sea. Interesting note: most forts have an emblem on the façade. In Dubrovnik it was usually the stone sculpture of their city's patron Saint, St. Blasius. Fort Bokar boasts Jesus' initials.
