    Euphrasius Basilica Details

The Istria area of Croatia, while beautiful, has some very interesting attractions that will delight you while you are on holiday there. For instance, the old town of Porec is home to one of the most fascinating attractions you will find the Euphrasius Basilica. The Euphrasius Basilica is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 6th century in the style of the times, Byzantine, this basilica is noted for its lovely mosaics on gold backgrounds. The basilica was named after Bishop Euphrasius and was erected somewhere in the mid 500's. It was also built over the small 4th century Oratory of St Maurus Martyr. Interesting note: the earthly remains of St Maurus are in a simple sarcophagus that stands on a mosaic floor from the 6th century. Take a good look at the 13th century ciborium with gold mosaics and marble columns at the front of the church. A ciborium is a chalice-like vessel used to contain the Blessed Sacrament.
