Karlovac Hotels and Accommodation
Karlovac is a moated city in the stunning Central European country of Croatia. The city is located at the fertile confluence of the Kupa, the Korana, the Mreznica and the Dobra rivers about 30 minutes drive from the Croatian capital Zagreb. Karlovac was named after the Styrian Archduke Karl II Habsburg, the commander of the Croatian Military Border who founded a nearby fortress. The city was founded in 1579 with the aim of strengthening the Austrian Hapsburg Empire against the advances of the Ottomans. One of the city’s most beautiful tourist attractions is the city itself. The city is set out in the unique shape of a six-pointed star and divided into 24 blocks with a quadrangular pattern. The star shape can be seen all throughout the town. Points of interest in the renaissance city include several baroque churches and buildings which have been preserved within the old fort town. At the northern edge of the star is a baroque square that has a 17th century palace and military headquarters.
Just wandering the around the old quarter is enough to draw visitors to the fairy book town, but Karlovac also has other historical attractions to interest travelers including the Church of the Holy Trinity and its Franciscan monastery, the Karlovac Museum and the Dubovac Fortification.
