If you have some spare time on your hands and want to go to an incredibly peaceful and beautiful park while in Zagreb, then go to Maksimir Park (Maksimirska). Maksimir Park (Maksimirska) is a beautiful English style garden that covers about 18 hectares. It is considered to be the largest park in Zagreb. Delight in two pavilions that were constructed in 1843 – the Bellevue Pavilion and the Echo Pavilion (called Echo thanks to its highly unique acoustics). The whole complex is a maze of flower gardens, wooded areas, and man made lakes. You will also find a small Zoo with a variety of animals.
Maksimir Park is also called Zagreb's living monument. It is actually named after Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac, who started its construction in 1794. It was one of the very first parks in the monarchy at that time, and also one of the first in the world. It took seven years to finally complete, but when it was done it drew awe and admiration.
