It can get quite hot in Zagreb, Croatia during the summer months, so if you arrive there in warmer than usual weather, head out to the JU Parka prirode Medvednica, Nature Park Medvednica. It's only been open a few short years – since 2000 precisely, but has grown over that period of time to include many innovative programs for the whole family. The JU Parka prirode Medvednica is a non-profit organization and financed from the State's budget, among other entities. The main thrust of what the park wishes to accomplish is to protect and preserve nature in the park the way it is meant to be experienced.
Two of the more innovative programs the park offers are the Artworks Program and the Adopt a Bat program. The Arts program asks children to submit a drawing, poem, essay, etc. on the theme Nature Park Medvednica. The best works are published on their Internet web site. The Adopt A Bat program is really unique and gives people a chance to adopt any one of the several species of bats that live in Veternica cave. The program is designed to educate people that bats are not dangerous, don't suck blood and don't get tangled in your hair. You can even name your bat, get a T-shirt with a picture of a bat, get 2 free visits to the Veternica Cave, plus an ID card with a picture and basic information of the bat. Great marketing, and a lot of great fun too!
