The Cathedral in Zagreb, Croatia is considered to be one of the most famous buildings in the city. Right now it is called the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and its soaring spires can be seen all over Zagreb. The Cathedral is 77 m long and 46.2m wide – quite a large building. Interesting note: when the Turks invaded Bosnia and Croatia at the end of the 15th century, a renaissance fortification wall was built around the Cathedral. Not much of it is left any longer, however in the 17th century, a fortified watchtower was built on the south side of the church. It was used as a military observation point. In 1880 there was an earthquake that badly damaged the church, collapsing the main nave and the tower. Restoration was started in Neo Gothic style that you see today.
