The Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Croatia succeeded one of the first National Museums first opened in 1846. At that time it was called the National Hall and was in a mansion in Upper Town owned by Count Dragutin Draskovic. The culture and history of this museum is fascinating in that in 1829 those promoting the Croatian cultural identity banded together to collect funds to realize their dream of a building that would tell their story. In 1866 the Hall became the State Institute of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia and was separated into Archaeology and Natural History Departments. After a few more moves of a political nature, the current museum wound up where you will see it today.

The museum you see today has a collection of over 400,000 artifacts and monuments. Many of the artifacts come from archaeological excavations throughout Croatia. Excavations are still ongoing related to the museum and include the Roman ruins near Zagreb (Andautonia). It's a never-ending process of constant digging to locate, preserve and understand the history of the area.
