This particular university has the distinction of being not only the largest, but the oldest continuously running university in south eastern Europe. The University of Zagreb was founded in 1669. Of course back then it did not have as many faculties as it does now, nor as many students. Today it has 29 faculties, three art academies and the Center for Croatian Studies plus over 50,000 full time undergraduate and postgraduate students. Some of the fields you may choose to study in are: Arts, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Engineering, Humanities, Natural and Social Sciences.
The University of Zagreb, in Croatian called Sveučilište u Zagrebu was founded by Emperor and King Leopold I of Hapsbury. At that time the "academy" as it was called, was operated by Jesuits until the order itself was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773. In 1776 Queen Maria Theresa issued a decree founding the Royal Academy of Science. The academy had the distinction of educating most of the upper class society of Croatia.
