Set in the former location of the Plaza de La Cienaga, this exquisite Cathedral is a very noteworthy piece of architecture; it is considered to be the one and only example of the baroque construction style that possesses asymmetrical features -- one of the ornate towers that occupy this building is wide than the other. This particularly unique design was no arbitrary decision however, as the purpose of it was to allow the water that had a tendency to accumulate on the plaza to flow freely throughout the streets during the the colonial period, the time in which it was built.
As it stands today however, that functionality is no longer necessary on account of modern drainage but, in spite of that, the church still serves a great example in architectural integration of timeless beauty and social purpose and will make a great destination for any Cuban tourist wanting to capture sight of a truly unique construction.
