This majestic and artfully constructed cemetery is famous throughout the world for having architectural magnificence and aesthetic appeal. Particularly notable for its numerous elaborate sculptures and monuments, it possesses over five hundred chapels, vaults, and mausoleums. Established in the year of 1876, the cemetery holds close to a million graves and as such space comes at a premium but so does design; many headstones have had masterful work done by famous Cuban sculptors such as the brilliant Ramos Blancos, among other notable artists.
Cuban tourists will also enjoy the rich culture, history, and mystique that surrounds this cemetery. For example, certain religious practices of African Cubans manifest here in the form of colorful and ornately dressed dolls placed next to graves as offerings to their respective deities.
