One of the most notable Cuban Attractions is Morro Castle, a beautiful fortress standing guard over the entrance to Havana Bay. Built by the Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, this awesome structure was erected in 1589 while Cuba was under the rule of Spain. The fortress, named after one of the Three Wise Men, was captured later on by the British during 1762.
Interestingly, Morro Castle was once home to a school of lighthouse keepers. There once stood a watchtower in the fortress until it was destroyed by the English during the seige of 1762. Other than that, the walls are in perfect condition with the exception of the cannons which are badly rusted. The fortress has barracks that reach up to four stories in height and a underwater archeology presentation is also established here. Cuban Tourists should take note that this castle shares its name with other buildings in Cuba and Puerto Rico.
