The Agia Napa Monastery, a major Cyprus attraction, is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Agia Napa region. It was built around 1500 A.D. This area had once been a fishing village which is where the monastery stands today. The surrounding areas were covered by thick forest. Cyprus Tourism organization encourages tourists every year to visit this place. Inside the church there is a cave which tells tells the story how this was the area of worship for early settlers. This Monastery is dedicated to Mary, The Virgin. As far as the legend goes the original icon of Virgin Mary was discovered in the cave by a hunter.
This monastery was regarded as a convent for the women. Later on it was converted to a monastery and then it started serving as the Conference Center which serves the church’s activities in Cyprus and also that of the Middle East. The Monastery is the historical insignia of Agia Napa. While visiting the other sights of Cyprus, this place is also worth a visit. So include it on your things to do in Cyprus list.
