One of the exotic sights of Cyprus is the Neolithic settlement at Kalavasos-Kokkinoyia. The site is located near the south coastline of Cyprus, some distance inside from the great Mediterranean Sea. The best way to reach here is through the tours that Cyprus tourism organization arranges. The name Kokkinoyia comes from the Greek word “kokkinos” meaning “red”. Kokkinoyia signifies the “red-soil” of the region. This settlement goes back to the later Neolithic period. This period is also identified as the “Pottery Neolithic” or “Ceramic”.

The late Neolithic is known as Sotira culture followed by initial Chalcolithic period. Porphyrios Dikaios was first to discover Kokkinoyia site in 1940. He was from the Cypriot Department of Antiquities. He began the excavation of the site in 1947 along with nearby “Kalavasos Pamboules site”. You will enjoy many activities in Cyprus, close to the numerous other Cyprus attractions, like Kokkinovia.
