Karlstejn is a small village a short distance from Prague, situated on the banks of the Berounka River. Karlstejn is most famous for a gothic castle which the village was named for. The castle was built in the year 1348 by Charles IV, a Holy Roman Emperor. This castle can be seen from all over Karlstejn as a landmark. The castle is also surrounded by five limestone hills which are thickly sprinkled with oak trees as part of a national forest. You should also take the time to hike to Svaty Jan Pod Skalou, a monastery with a name that means, “Saint John Under The Rock”.
Karlstejn has a beautiful 12 hectare vineyard surrounding it, and said vineyard produces some memorable wines. The village also has a small museum, a museum of wax figures, another museum of nativity scenes, and a “house of clock”. Other tourist attractions worth seeing are the Chateau of Horovice, the Chateau of Zbraslav, the Chateau of Breznice, and the Koneprusy Caves. After all of that walking and sightseeing, you will have worked up quite the appetite. Restaurants in Karlstejn vary from quite expensive (around the castle) to very reasonable (a pub close to the monastery). You'll find authentic Czech food here that you will throughly enjoy.
