Zelný trth or Cabbage Market is a lively place in Brno, Moravia. Since the Middle Ages, this square has played host to a Vegetable or Farmers’ Market and the annual Christmas Market. Despite the passage of years, it has kept the original shape. The buildings clustered around it include the Old Town Hall.
In the Square and near the Market, you will see a tall statue rising from a fountain. The fountain once acted as a holding tank for fisher mongers selling their wares. The pool of clear and clean water kept the fish fresh and alive until someone selected one and took it home. The fountain is Parnassus Fountain. It is the work of Fischer von Erlach. It rose in the square in the 1690s, Baroque naturalism meeting trompe l’oeil. It is a theatrical set piece. The depiction of Hercules is overt; the rendering of the four seasons is less obvious.
