From around the middle of May until the beginning of June, the skies above the city of Brno, Moravia, in the Czech Republic, are alight nightly. This fireworks extravaganza is known as Ignis Brunensis. It began humbly in 1997 with a small local display. It now is one of the largest displays of its type in all Europe, encompassing the entire city. It includes an International Fireworks Competition over Brno Dam. Thousands attend to watch the colors light up the night sky.
The Ignis Brunensis is truly a complete city event. It incorporates many cultural aspects of the city of Brno. It takes over the historical center of the downtown. Merchants and institutions, alike, try to take part. The Museum sets up a display. Spilberk Castle becomes a dramatic backdrop against which the lights play. There are concerts and even a golf tournament. It has become one of the major things to do in Brno, truly one of the unique Brno attractions.
