The founders of the famous spas at Marienbad were not town residents. They were monks from the nearby monastery of Teplá established in 1193 by a Czech nobleman, Hroznata. He asked several members of the the Prague Strahov monastery to come. The result was the construction of the Monastic buildings by 1232. These included the 13th century Church of the Annunciation of the Lord. Architect Christoph Dientzenhofer altered some sections in late 17th and early 18th centuries. The communists closed the facility in 1950, but the monks returned in 1989. They are working at reviving the order and restoring the premises to their former glory.

There are two major sights to see: the library and the Monastic church. The Library, with 100,000 books, including over 1,000 manuscripts, holds the honor of being the second largest monastic library in all of Bohemia. The Church with its Romanesque-Gothic blend of exterior architecture has a Baroque interior. There are three naves and significant sculptures by I. Platzer as well as frescoes by a local artist, E. Dollhoph. The chapel contains the remains of the beatified Hroznata. The church also boasts two Baroque organs. They are used in the Mozart Festival as well as in other events.
