There are many beautiful churches in the Czech Republic. In Prague, Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer is the creator of several, including St. John of the rock and St. Nicholas. In his home region of Bavaria, he built one of the finest examples of Baroque – St. Mary Magdalene. It sits on a hill overlooking the spa town of Karlovy Vary. From its vantage point, you can look down at the Vřídlo or Hot Spring.

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene arose from the desire of the Knights of the Cross in the early 18th century. It is a single-aisled church with an oval floor plan. The exterior has two towers and an impressive semi-circular stairway. The interior is light pink in hue. Of particular note is the high altar. It features the image of Mary. Positioned beside her are several sculptures by Jakob Erle. They date from 1752 and include depictions of St. Augustine, St. Jerome, St. Peter and St. Paul. The side altars are also lavishly appointed. A gallery graces the church from on high while in the cellars, a funeral chapel holds the remains of a decommissioned cemetery.
