Kutna Hora is a little town in the Czech Republich, located about 44 miles east of Prague, which is the capital. A rather famous cathedral, medieval as it was built in the 1300s, is called the Church of Saint Barbara. The area miners collected money to build the church. Another church and cemetery, however, became even more famous over time. Located in Sedlec, about 2 kilometers from the middle of Kutna Hora, this church added a chapel which became famous because of the actions of an abbot named Henry.
Henry journeyed to the Holy Land in 1278, and brought back a container full of dirt from the area, which he spread over the cemetery in Sedlec. This caused people to refer to the Sedlec church as being on sacred land, and began to bring their loved ones there for burial, thinking that if they were buried there, there would be a place in Heaven guaranteed for them. By 1318, an ossuary had to be built in 1511 as a place to put human bones so there would be more room for new “customers” in the regular graveyard. What makes the Sedlec church so different and worthy of a visit by tourists is that the inside of it is decorated with some 40,000 sets of human bones. You may not be too hungry after this tour, but if you are, the restaurant at the Marble House is a real winner. Remember, if you are looking for budget Kutna Hora hotels, call on us.
