There are many bridges in the Czech Republic. Some of them date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Others are modern constructions. Roudnice nad Labem constructed its first bridge across the River Elbe (Labe) from 1333 to 1340. It was a stone structure, one of the first in Czechoslovakia, and fell victim to the conflagration of the Thirty Years War. In fact, it remained untouched and in disrepair until later.

In the early 20th century, there was a need for a new bridge to span the river. This time, the material was not stone, but iron. It was laid out on eight concrete pillars. At the same time, several changes occurred to affect the appearance of the town and the control of the river. Weirs were added to control water flow and the grades improved. A tollbooth became another addition. To remark upon the occasion and to act as symbolism of the then border between Czechs and Germans, the town erected two statues. One was of the Bohemian Lion. The other was of the Czech Lion. The bridge still stands. You cross it going into and out of the city.
