There once stood a large castle on a rocky out climb over the River Labe. It was a fortification for the region and he community of Roudnice nad Labem. The passing of time, however, saw the Castle evolve from a Romanesque structure into a Romanesque-Gothic edifice. The building continued to grow, but, by the middle of the 1500s, it had added Renaissance elements. By the 17th century, it was consumed by the opulence of the Baroque period. The Castle no longer resembled a fort. It had evolved into a convoluted complex.

Faced with this hodgepodge, Václav Eusebius from Lobkowicz decided to eradicate and start anew. Only a small piece of the original was to remain. Together with Francesco Caratti Pietro Colombo and Antonio Porta, a new building arose out of the old - a Chateau. It rose four storeys for three wings around the courtyard. The entrance gate is crowned by a tower. For each corner of the structure there is a bastion matched by its own terrace. Now stripped of its rich art treasures of Brughel and Rubens, the Chateau is now the home of the Czech Republic Military Music Academy.
