In a verdant park standing high above the town of Roudnice nad Labem in the Czech Republic, is a lookout post – an elegantly crafted watchtower. Unlike the earlier manifestations from the town’s early history, this is a modern watchtower. It is a platform soaring above the city. It is also a work of art.

This watchtower bears the name of the Václav Kratochvíl Watchtower after the original landowner. It is the product of the interwar period. It is a combination of function and art. As such, this particular tower exemplifies the between the war concept and style of functional modernism. The structure is the product of the Prague architect Oskar Štěpánek. Construction began in 1935. The result is an elegant observation tower. The base is circular. The ramp is of brick with the viewing platform sitting atop six willowy pillars. To reach the platform, you must climb the circular winding staircase. From here, you can view the city below and beyond.
