Not to far from Pležn is the Benedictine Monastery at Kladruby. Vladislav I is the ruler responsible for its initiation in 1114. He is buried there. What rose out of his initial steps was one of the largest and wealthiest monastery complexes in Bohemia. Its name is lengthier than any other in the region.

The monastery has undergone many changes and survived the disasters of the conflagration by the Hussites and during the Thirty Years War. Kilian Ignaz Diezenhofer took the monastery in hand, transforming it into a chateau with a Romanesque and Gothic blend of styles. The hiring of Giovanni Santini ensured the building has a touch of Baroque splendor. The façade is lavishly ornate. The original tower became a Baroque cupola featuring a lantern topped by a golden crown (1716-1718). The cold paving stones below mirror the stars and zig-zag pattern on the transept roof above. The sculptures are by the Baroque artist Matthias Braun.
