The Church of the Assumption near the Franciscan Monastery in Pležn, like so many churches in the Czech Republic, began life as a Gothic structure. You can see indications of its origins on the exterior. The interior, however, has many elements of later periods, including work from the 1700s. These include an altar.

The interior is worth a visit. The ceilings are low. The pillars are thick. Both are clear indications of the church’s Gothic origins. Of particular interest is the depiction of Christ. He hangs, nailed by only one foot and one hand to his crucifix. He is also lacks the traditional beard. A Madonna, dating from the 14th century is below the main altarpiece with its copy of Ruben’s Annunciation. An altar in the south of the nave features Rococo carvings of St. Jan of Nepomunk. A Rococo pulpit dates from 1740. There is also a group of statues of the Apostles within to admire.
