One of the oldest buildings in Pležn is the Franciscan Monastery. This structure has a 13th century chapel – the Chapel of St. Barbara (1370-1380). The monastery, with the Chapel, is an excellent example of original early Gothic elements. Some are rarities in the Czech Republic where the Baroque dominates many sacral monuments.

Of particular interest in the Monastery is the vaulting. On the east side, the vaulting extends to the ground. The stellar example of vaulting supporting it only single column supports. Leave the cloister and head towards the Chapel. A visit to the Chapel of St. Barbara at the east side of the main cloister is a visit to the Gothic past. This is a building untouched by periodical modernization. A Gothic Madonna is from the 14th century. You can marvel at the rendering and clarity of the 15th century, rose-hued frescoes beneath the graceful ribbed vault. You may not appreciate the subject – the rather gruesome death of St. Barbara.
