During WW II many of the beautiful synagogues disappeared, destroyed or dismantled. Fortunately, a reminder of their former presence and past remains today in Pležn. This is the Great Synagogue. It is the third largest in the world after those in Budapest and Jerusalem. It has existed since 1888. A simple red brick building, it grew out of the donations of the city’s Jewish community. This generosity is also responsible for its current restoration process.

The architect of the Great Synagogue was Rudolf Štech. It is in a Moorish and Romanesque style. You can see this by looking at the chevroned roof with its two onion domes. Inside, above the Torah in the hall is a rare pneumatic organ. The building can sit 2,000 worshipers on the main floor and 800 in the high balcony. This makes it ideal for its current usage: a concert venue and exhibition space. It currently is the permanent home of an exhibition on local Jewish history.
