Town Halls can be fascinating. They tell a story of the community’s past. They show glimpses of architectural styles and preferences of the times. The Old Town Hall in Pležn is an example of 16th century architecture meeting early 20th century concerns with embellishment and modernization. It sits on Republican Square (Náměstí Republiky) - a Renaissance edifice from the 16th century with an early 20th century sgrafitto (etchings) smothering its façade. The latter work is by J. Koula.

Stand outside and admire the construction. The building has a simple ground floor. The only aperture is the door. An unadorned moulding separates it from the second and “Lord’s Floor.” This and subsequent floors feature windows and cornices. An attic, with painted gables, has a frieze as well as a shield, vases and a weathercock. Inside, there is a clove, vaulted ceiling. A hearth retains its Renaissance character. However, the staircases that overwhelm you upon entry are additions by Koula.
