Slav and Střelecký Ostrov Prague
There are two small islands within reach of the Charles Bridge. One is Slav Island or Slovanský Island. It derives its name from the many Slavic conventions held here since 1848. The other island is Střelecký Ostrov. This is the smaller of the two.
Slav Island is really a large sandbar. You can wander it, enjoying the gardens and views of the river. You can even hire a boat and paddle along the river, even under St. Charles Bridge. This island once was home to a spa and dye works. In 1841, the first train demonstration took place on Slav Island. It got up to speeds of 11km per hour. In the middle of the island is a meeting hall dating from the 19th century. At the far southern end, you can see a 15th century water tower. It was once part of a mill. Notice the onion-shaped dome. On nearby Střelecký Ostrov, you can also rent a paddleboat. Cross it via Legion’s Bridge. Lay back and enjoy the sand. This chestnut-covered island is Prague’s best beach. In the summer, you can also catch an open-air movie showing.
