The first St. Charles University Botanical Gardens date from the 14th century. Charles IV saw fit to their creation. In 1775, the gardens, still thriving, were in the Smichov district of Prague. Between 1897 and 1898, however, a change of location was in order. Today, the Charles University Gardens are at Na Slupi.

The Charles University Botanical Gardens are both public gardens and exhibition space. Within its boundaries stands a large greenhouse. It dates from 1948 and is the home of only Central European flora. The gardens also host several open exhibitions. You may arrive in time to see an exhibit of tropical birds or of exotic fish. One of the more popular – if not the most popular- attractions is a giant water lily. The leaves are so huge they can support the weight of a young child. Every year, it puts forth multiple blossoms. You have to catch them quickly. They die within the same day.
