The Municipal House on Republisky Street sits on ground once occupied by the Royal Court. They left for the safety and security of Prague. Instead of palaces and castles, this structure appeared. Taking from 1906 to 1912, the Municipal house has come to be the most prominent of the Art Nouveau structures in Prague.

The construction of the Municipal Building involved the efforts and output of many of the leading artists of the period. The designer was Antonín Balšanek with the help of Osvald Polívak. They intended the building to be both a cultural center and a statement on art. Without and within the evidence is clearly in their favor. Look up above the entryway at the mosaic. In a semi-circular fashion it states” Homage to Prague.” It is set between sculptures by Karel Spillar representing the oppression and eventual rebirth of the Czech people. The top of the façade also boasts several sculptures, this time representing history, architecture, art, literature and painting. The interior, even down to its doorknobs is pure Art Nouveau. An easy way to enjoy the building is to come here to attend an event at the Smetana Hall, Prague’s principal Concert Hall.
