The Church of Our Lady Below the Chains sits in the center of the fortified monastery of the Knights. The complex acted as a guard to the Old Judith Bridge. The Church, itself, began as a Romanesque structure. Like so many churches, over the years, it altered. Torn down in the 13th century, it became first Gothic than Baroque. The towers, square and bulky are Gothic. The apse, on the other hand, is strictly Baroque. The nave, unfinished, stands open to the elements. On the high Altar, you will wish to look at the paintings depicting the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist coming to abet the King of Malta during a notorious naval victory of 1571. The two Saints helped the King win over the Turks.
