When King Wenceslas ordered the construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, the vision was a grand one. He had a vision of the most magnificent church in Prague rising on the spot selected. Its size and grandeur was to overshadow all other churches in Prague at the time. The result, however, did not measure up to the intent. The existing church, nonetheless, is interesting and worth visiting.

Construction began for the Church of Our Lady of Snows in the 14th century at the end of Wenceslas Square. In 1397, it had grown upwards but not outwards. It stood at 33 meters or 110 feet. Inside, the nave reflects the focus on height. It is the tallest altar for a structure of its size. In fact, the nave is higher than that you will see in St. Vitus Cathedral. The altar is undoubtedly the city of Prague’s largest. It rises in three tiers featuring statues of the Saints and a crucifix. While here, you may also want to wander next door to the art exhibit in the Chapel of the Pasov Virgin.
