The ancient Prague Castle complex holds the 2nd oldest church in the city. This is St. George’s Basilica. It is the oldest religious building in the castle. The Basilica dates from 921. Little exterior evidence from this period remains as the Basilica was enlarged in 973 and rebuilt in 1142. The 2 towers, Adam and Eve date from this period. You can clearly see them from those hotels in Prague close to St. George’s Basilic and Prague Castle.

The Basilica was subjected to further work in the 13th century. It obtained a new portico on the west side and a chapel dedicated to the venerated Saint Ludmila. It contains her tomb. The church is also the final resting place of several rulers. They include Prince Vratislov - founder of St. George’s Basilica. There are also the tombs of 3 Premyslid rulers. The red-brick façade is from the Baroque era. It includes the Chapel of St. John of Nepomunk. You can wander through the church as part of a tour. A better way to view it is by attending a classical concert. Try to enter through the side entrance. The Renaissance typanum boasts a wonderful St. George and the Dragon. Inside, you can admire the dome frescoes of Vaclav Vavrinec Reiner. Enjoy the music, but be sure to bundle up if the weather is nippy. The high ceilings make the interior slightly chilly. Afterwards, wander through the winding streets back to a warm discount hotel in Prague within sight of St. George’s Basilica.
