Hunger Wall Prague
In the southern most boundary of the city is a white wall. Although the original wall stretched throughout the region, it now spans some 1,200 meters (1,300 yards). It is about 6m high and 2 m wide. Yet, what was once both a make-work project and a defensive measure, is now a small structure running from Újezd across Pĕtrin Park to Strahov. This is the remains of Prague’s Hunger Wall.
Construction began in 1360. It was a project instigated by Charles IV. At the time, it served two functions. It was to protect in times of attack. The crenellated battlements and marksmen platform along he existing inner wall attest to this function. It is also a make-work project. Famine was rampant in the country at this time. The Hunger Wall provided employment for starving people. The Hunger Wall. therefore, manages to fulfill two goals. While you are up here on the hill, take time to visit the Rose Garden as well as the observatory.
