The original name of this Prague Theater was the New German Theater. This indicates the emphasis of its work. It also pointed reveals its rivalry. The New German Theater saw itself in competition with the Czech National Theater. It did defeat the competition in one way. It became the major opera house in Prague after 1945. When the State Opera left the National Opera, in 1992, they chose to come here. The name change reflects the new direction.

The New German Theater is a neo-Rococo structure. It sits on the site of the New Town Theater demolished in 1885. The exterior carries a Neo-Classical frieze. Sitting in a pediment above the columned loggia, it is remarkable for its presentation of the figures of Dionysus and Thalia. The interior is stuccoed. The auditorium features the original paintings. If you come here in August or September, you can join them in celebrating Verdi with the Verdi Festival. At other times, you can wallow in an Italian classic.
