Besřich Smetana Museum Prague
Three are three major composers idealized by the citizens of Prague. They all have connections to the city. In a neo-Renaissance building beside the river, is a museum dedicated to one of these men. It is in an old Waterworks building. This is the Bedřich Smetana Museum.
Together with Mozart and Dvořak, the Czech composer, Smetana (1824-1884), forms the sacred threesome for lovers of classical music. His nationalist beliefs pervaded his work and life. He took part in the 1848 revolution. His “My Country,” one of a cycle of six symphonic movements, stirs national pride. The Vlatana movement leads off opening night of the prestigious Prague Spring Music Festival. His “The Bartered Bride” marks the beginning of Czech opera. You can find samples of his work in this museum. There are documents, letters musical instruments and scores. The museum also displays memorabilia such as his spectacles and his wives jewelry. In front, placidly sitting down, is a statue of this man.
