In 1911, František Bílek (1872-1941) built his home in Hradčany. Bílek was a sculptor, an architect and an all-round artiste. His sculpture is in the Trades Fair Palace in Prague (The Blind) and in the Cathedral of St. Vitus (Crucifixion). He was eccentric and multi-faceted. His home reflects these aspects and his talent.

The half-mooned shaped stone and brick Bílek Villa is the first home in Prague with a flat roof. It is also a building without straight angles. Instead, there are gentle curves. On the ground floor are the private quarters of Bílek and his family. These are Spartan with set pieces distinctly spiritual in nature. There is an altar-like element incorporated into the wall nearby his wife’s dressing table. The furniture reflects his expression of art and soul. The metal door handles are alive with engraved symbols of life such as leaves and birds. There are many stone and wood reliefs throughout the home. These include bronze sculptures of his two children, age 4 ½ and 6. At the top of the stairs to the front garden is a sculptural grouping. It is Comenius Saying goodbye to his Country. There are also his works for viewing: The Grieving Angel by the Cross (1902), Grief (1908) and Measure (1922).
