The Communist presence in Prague and the Czech Republic lasted from 1945 to 1989. It was a period of censorship, propaganda and reconstruction of life in general. The title of the exhibit sums up the purpose and sentiment of the Museum. It is called “Communism – the Dream, the Reality and the Nightmare.”

The entry hall to the exhibit displays two life-size bronze statues of the founding fathers of the movement: Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. The exhibit rooms fan out to reveal various characteristics or aspects of the communism occupation. One room exhibits examples of the Social Realist movement in art and architecture. Photographs reveal the communist ideas of architecture – ugly pre-fabricated concrete structures. Another displays different types of political propaganda including posters dating from the 1950s to the 1960s. There is everything from a schoolroom of the period, including the textbooks. Political cartoons, equipment from a machinist shop and even border guard machine guns and other weaponry. One room is designed to give the visitor the fell of being in an interrogation room. A projector plays movies of targets of Communist harassment. They include Vaclav Havel. If the picture the museum paints is too depressing, wander next door to a purely capitalist enterprise – a casino.
