In the 16th century, Rudolph II ordered the construction of several small cottages for his 24 members of the Castle Guard. These abodes changed their occupants in the 17th century, becoming the homes of goldsmiths. This is how the street became Golden Lane. In the 19th century, however, Golden Lane was tarnished and decaying. It was a slum. In 1952, the Communist regime altered the street, once again. It became the basis of what it is today, a shopping arcade.

The Golden Lane is a side lane of bright and small painted houses. They are just past the arches of Prague Castle’s walls. Number 22 once housed F. Kafka in 1916. If you gain access to number 24, you can climb the stairs to a defense corridor. Here, there are wooden shields, suits of armor and costumes from the period. You can wander further in the corridor to reach White Tower or Dalibirka. You can also stay on the ground and browse through the many souvenir shops and the offerings of books and glass.
