Students of botany and people who simply love flora will be next door to heaven when visiting Prague's Botanical Gardens. This magnificent attraction is a natural treasure to the Czech people. It is not far from the Prague Zoo, should you wish to fit both into your touring schedule. Start with the Japanese Garden. It is considered by many visitors to be the most attractive part of the section called Open Air Exhibits. Deciduous trees, conifers, and evergreen shrubs surround a lake that has a small turtle shaped island. Here you can walk along sandy paths and listen to the sound of a waterfall. The Japanese Cherry Tree Grove is a great favorite with both locals and tourists. According to Shinto symbolism, the trees represent spring, perfection, and maiden tenderness.

In the Small Alpine House there is a collection of temperate orchids, Mediterranean flora, and plants from New Zealand and Australia. The Exhibition of Irises is in full blossom from the end of May to the end of June. It includes Siberian and Kaempfer’s irises. St. Claire’s Vineyard, which has an 18th century vineyard house, is protected as a National Heritage site. The prime attraction is Fata Morgana, a tropical greenhouse that offers a mini-tour around the world through tropical flora. It covers 1750 square meters, and is unique in Europe.
