Hotels in Carolinium
The Carolinium at St. Charles University has been the seat of the Rector since 1348. This building is the oldest structure of the University. Originally, Gothic, the Carolinium has since undergone several makeovers both Baroque and neo-Gothic. Renovations altered the structure in the 18th and 20th centuries. Nevertheless, it remains a visual treat for visitors.
The Gothic remains include the Oriel Chapel, the Arcade and the walls. The Oriel window is a fine example of this particular style. The courtyard is neo-Gothic from the reconstruction following World War II. Today, the Carolinium serves a limited function. It is host to only special ceremonial rites. These include graduation ceremonies. The Carolinium has also acted as a venue to special festivals such as the International Edgar Allan Poe Festival and Czech Foreigners Week. While visiting the Carolinium, you can also drop in for a visit to an art gallery in the vaulted labyrinth.
