The construction of the theater began in 1876. The completion date was 1884. Josef Zitek and Josef Schultz were the architects. The design selected was Neo-Renaissance, the name chosen in honor of Crown Prince Rudolph of Hapsburg. A gently curving balustrade carries an air of purpose. It has as décor statues of the distinguished artists and composers of Czech, Austrian and German origin. Dvořák Hall is home to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The Small Hall is host to chamber concerts. There is an art gallery on the premises. This is the Gallery Rudolphinum – displaying a modern art.
