The Czech Republic is a land where Saints play and have played a significant role in history. The most internationally renowned is Good King Wenceslas. His name is on cathedrals, churches, monasteries and town squares. He is the Patron Saint of the region of Bohemia. People also remember his rule and immortalize his memory in other ways. One of the more prominent contributions to keeping his memory alive is in St. Wenceslas Square.

The present equestrian statue of St. Wenceslas dates from 1912. Yet, Wenceslas Square has long been the home to such a statue. It took its sculptor, Josef Myslbek, 14 years to finish. The bronze work features St. Nicholas on horseback. At his foot are four additional Bohemian saints: Adalbert, Agnes, Ludmilla and Procopius. They became a part of the statue after the death of Myslbek. The Statue of St. Wenceslas is a very popular meeting place. If you want to rendezvous there, tell those involved to meet you “under the horse’s tail.”
