Wallenstein Palace Details

In 1624, Generalissimo Albrecht of Wallenstein decided to erect a building fitting of his current position as advisor of the Hapsburgs armies. It also was to match his overweening ambition to be an Emperor. In the end, his ambitions were thwarted. The monument, however, remains. It is the Wallenstein Palace. In order for the structure to achieve its monumental size, Wallenstein requisitioned 23 homes, a brick kiln and three gardens. The building has a two-storey Baroque main hall with enormous frescoes. They depict Wallenstein as God of War. He sits in a chariot holding the reins. In an unusual oval hall, the Audience Hall, a fresco reveals Vulcan at his work. In a large pavilion nearby, there are other frescos showing the voyage of the Argonauts to obtain the legendary Golden Fleece. You can wander the garden and look at the rows and rows of bronze statues. They are copies of the originals stolen by the Swedes during the war.
