Wenceslas is an important saint in the Czech Republic. There are many churches bearing his name. One of these is in Loket, not too far from the spa town of Karlovy Vary. It is simple church. The façade is plain. It sits on the site of an older Gothic Church. This building fell victim to fire. The church of St. Wenceslas rose to replace it in 1734.

The church of St. Wenceslas follows the design of Wolfgang Braubock. While its exterior is ordinary, the interior reveals several treasures. Within the Church are several valuable works. They include the altar paintings attributed to Petr Brandl. The side altars feature sculptures by Jan Wild. More importantly, the Church saved from its predecessor a Gothic Madonna and a statue of Christ. If you wander into the Churchyard, you will also see another reminder of Loket’s past. Interred here, in the crypt, is Lord Václav of Labkovice, once a prisoner in Loket Castle
